Interesting. I thought Roger Burgess was vehemently against any kind of auto transmission in the GSA series?

I'm like you, Bernie. I thought they were illegal. But here's the rules....scroll down to the section on transmissions and you'll see both automatic and planetary-type transmissions are legal, although LOCKUP CONVERTERS are not.

Note to Bill - Why am I talking about converters and fluid couplings? You're teachin' ME, bud....:) And yes, I remember well the old racing Hydrosticks and Torkmasters. They were the rage back in the day. And who knows...a version of the Torkmaster could resurface at some point in time.

I appreciate very much, that you have taken the time and patience to delve into this problem to the extent that you have and I must say I have learned a lot.

The Torkmaster is dead.... long live the Torkmaster!!!! :)

Very interesting. I learned something new today.

Wonder who will take advantage of the allowance of auto transmissions. I don't think anybody uses one right now?

There's an Auto ProMod group that goes around, but they're dialed waaaaaay back to run a 4.70 index. The last time they were here, one of them cut loose in qualifying and ran 4.20, which equates to 6.50 or so at 1320'. This was a with a 740" Musi and a 'Glide. It was cranked up but by no means maxed out.

There's a local Top Dragster that runs low 6's @230, 3.90 at our track. Blown alcohol BB Chev. He recently switched to a Lencodrive and was doing some testing right before they closed the track for the winter. Further testing is needed, as the car now blows the tires off at the hit.

If he blows the tires off at the hit, it's possible due to the converter multiplying the available torque beyond thje tires' ability to hook. The answer?

Possibly a fluid coupling, which doesn't multiply anything. The availability of such a unit may be a stumbling block in thje implementation of this plan, but if there's enough interest in such a piece, you can bet that somebody is going to build one. It might be possible to simply remove the stator from an existing converter to achieve this, but having done this, more stall speed would probably be needed. I had the sprag turn over (wouldn't "hold") in a car I had once, and the stall speed dropped dramatically... along with the converter's ability to multiply torque. It was an instant "dawg!!!"

Come on, Joe...Bill and I are havin' a good time and maybe someone will learn a thing or two, even if it's just the two of us. I know it's a rerun of old stuff; you already fussed him for the same thing nearly two years ago. But I wasn't a part of that thread, so let him tell me all about it in this one, if that's OK with everybody. As for 9-lived threads, we've got a ways to go before we can even hold a candle to the ' Competitive Ford Pro Stock' thread at Competition Plus, which has 2700 replies and counting.

Bill, I'd say that's exactly right, as to the local T/D guy I mentioned. Too much torque multiplication. Nothing they can't figure out by experimenting with some different gear ratios.

Carl, I think it's Bill who can't take the Joke.

This thread reminds me of a Cat, how many lives are left???:p

"Carl, I think it's Bill who can't take the Joke."

Where's the joke?

Looks more to me like sarcastic criticism from someone who has no appreciation for the subject matter.

Nothing funny about that...

actually learning a couple of things especially since we are putting a pro mod together with a lencodrive:eek:

Agreed. I've enjoyed this thread and have been learning from it. I see no reason to let it go by the side.

Thanks, Bernie. I've learned a lot here, and have thoroughly enjoyed the education I've gained through talking with those who are better-informed than I. I'm just a shadetree dilettante, who knows just enough to get himself into trouble... obviously.

The truth is, I have just about "shot my wad" insofar as offering anything new for discussion here. Maybe Joe is right; how many ways can I say, "fluid coupling"???

But, I will surely listen. It's really refreshing to read the gearhead-generated posts with real mechanical value, as opposed to the usual ("Joe Blow lost his sponsorship"/ "Joe Doakes" daughter is getting married") social commentary type of posts... This IS, after all, a drag racing board....

Happy holidays to all!

Bill
