Don't much go for the Bono dude, John...

Great article here by your DailyMail..
Bono the hypocrite?

Explaining all he's purchased, etc..while giving everybody a hard time about being so materialistic..when there are so many hungry people in the world.

nice article david - coming from a former huge fan of the band; i too have
lost interest with these 'rock-n-rollers' parading their 'noble causes' while
hiding behind their vast wealth. McCartney & Gelldoff are two others.
watch out and hope to hell no one ever utters the words 'sir gore'

i'm glad that these folks have the time to study and speak about
third world issues, but actually if they are so smart (and they are not)
they would spend their wealth developing third world economies.
there's no money exporting from these countries and no money coming
in, hence poverty. throw out the dictators, bring in business and
become part of the global supply chain.
so bono, let's take your global hi-tech company and place management,
distribution, or manufacturing in third world countries.
then i might again have a reason to listen to you.

Like some of his music... But Rock Stars being Knighted?????
What the Flipping, Bloody Hell does fame because you can sing have to do with with you really having an impact on the REAL world....

If Bono gave up all his Weath and lived in a one room flat... then maybe half the Cr@p that came out of his mouth might mean something.... but, what his does and says is as more personal PR than really helpful

David I don't mean this as an attack on you, rather the article.

Shouldn't a man who has accumlated great wealth be able to spend it how he sees fit? Would you rather he hoard all his money like so many other rock stars do? What that article neglects to mention is how much of his own money he has given compared to what others give precentage wise. That also does not take into consideration the personal time he gives to these causes. Sometimes giving time is better the giving money. One man can not wipe out poverty and hunger with his wealth. Not to sound sound preachy but that one man can get his fans to help out. The masses can do more then anyone person can, but it starts with one man getting thr masses organized.

The article also has one inaccuracy. It says, "He and the three other members of U2, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen and guitarist David 'The Edge' Evans, have also invested in Vertigo 3, an Airbus A320, to fly them around in style on their current world tour."
It makes it sound as if they have purchased an airplane. In the past they have always rented a plane from Air Canada and re skinned it with their tour colors, juts like other bands do. Who knows it may have changed as at this point it maybe cheaper for them to actually buy an airplane. Besides they are in the music business which means world tours. Are they supposed to travel the world on a tramp steamer?

Harry Chapin had a motto when playing. He would say something to the effect of "One night for me, one night for the other guy" Harry would basically donate every other night he played to a cause. He would really put his money where his mouth was. Harry is now gone and his causes do not get any more money from him directly and his every other night campaign, but what he taught goes even further. He would say that other do not have to follow his every other night policy, but if more people gave a small percentage of what they make the world would be a better place. Isn't that what Bono is doing? He his giving his share while asking others to give a small share as well. In lots of ways Bono is a fundraiser for these groups.

I know the article was slanted, Jim. I just found it a bit hypocritical..and I don't know how much he has personally donated. But you're right..regardless of his tactics..it does raise awareness.

Now, Harry Chapin was my hero. Geez..he donated more than $5 million of his own money to feed the hungry..and he died in a VW Rabbit. Sandy is still doing it. Back in the 70's..that was much money.

Harry was the best. He was good friends with a family I work with on the Railroad, the Marsden's. Jay would always tell me stories about Harry. Harry would stay with them when he played the Boston area. Jay once told picking up Harry at the airport. When Harry got in the car Jay asked how he was, without missing a beat Harry said "I'm broke." He went on to say that is was because of all his charity work. All the while he had the biggest smile, thats the kind of guy Harry was. happiest when he was helping others. If you have ever listened to the Carnige Hall Tribute concert right befor Dolores Hall sings some one yells out somthing to the effect of "hold on to you seats." This was Zeke Marsden, Jays brother. The editors wanted to edit out his yelling, but Steve and Tom Chapin said no way, Harry would have had loved that. After Zeke died Steve Chapin wrote a song about Zeke and the engine they named after him. In a bootleg from BU Harry mentions going to their moms for dinner. The Marsden family has remained close with Harrys family amd brothers as well as Big John Wallace from Harrys band.

Is Bono still a resident of the UK?

If so, he is giving a HUGE chunk of his personal (non- U2 Corporation) money right back to the govenment there in taxes...

The Beatles wern't kidding when they wrote that song..
