Bob Motz In Critical Condition After Burning Truck To Ground
What was supposed to be a night of thrills at the Kanawha Valley Raceway turned out to be much more than that.
It's the 2007 "Night of Fire" but that title took on a very literal and dangerous meaning.
Bob Motz was in his truck at the starting line going through the normal routine when a crew member noticed a fuel leak and told Motz to shut down the truck, within seconds the truck caught fire and was completely engulfed in flames. Motz struggled to get out of the truck and finally fell out of the passenger side door, where he layed on fire while a track official bravely reached into the flames and pulled Motz out.
He suffered second and third degree burns and was air-lifted to Cabell Huntington hospitals burn unit in West Virginia. At this time, this is all the information we have.
Also injured were 2 track workers who bravely done everything they could to save Motz' life. They both suffered some minor burns and are expected to be okay.
The Point Pleasant fire department was on hand at the other end of the track. The track announcer yelled over the loud speaker numerous times for the fire department, who took nearly 3 minutes to get to the top of the track where Motz had finally made it out of the truck.
The State Fire Marshal is on the scene along with the Point Pleasant Fire Department, Mason County EMS and the Mason County Sheriff's Department investigating the accident.
