BERNSTEIN REMAINS IN TOP 10 AS REGULAR SEASON COUNTDOWN HITS HALFWAY MARK AT TOPEKA

TOPEKA, Kan. (June 1) – The O’Reilly Sumer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka marked the halfway point of the 18-race Countdown to the Championship regular season. At the conclusion of the first 18 races, the top 10 in Top Fuel point standings will transfer to the Countdown to 1. Following the Topeka event, Brandon Bernstein and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team continue to reside in the top 10 as they have all season.

Bernstein qualified eighth in Kansas with a 4.623/324.75.

In the opening round of eliminations, Bernstein rolled to the starting line to face good friend J.R. Todd. They were the first pair down the track, and Bernstein was the first winner in the opening volley.

Winning by a car length, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster clocked 4.625/311.99 vs. J.R. Todd’s 4.667/286.74.

"J.R. is one of my best friends,” said Bernstein, “but both of us have a job to do today. Our team was fortunate to get this round win, now we need to keep going and keep banking those points.”

In the quarterfinals, Bernstein’s opponent was Larry Dixon. The cars were equally matched but Dixon reached the finish stripe first with a 4.691/302.14 to Bernstein’s 4.698/309.70.

“What can you say other than it was a good old drag race,” said Bernstein. “When we got back to the pits and looked at the data from the run, the computer graphs showed that we were spinning the tires down track. If the tires hadn’t gotten a little loose down there, we might have gotten around him, but who knows. Larry’s a good driver and they have a tough team.”

Bernstein remains seventh in NHRA Top Fuel point standings.
