INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 18, 2007) - For the second time this 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season, Jack Beckman and the Mail Terminal Services Dodge Funny Car team will represent their iconic sponsor Valvoline by running a Valvoline body on the MTS/DSR Funny Car at this weekend's O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex.

Beckman, who moved into second in the Countdown to Four playoffs point standings following his runner-up finish in Memphis on Sunday, with two races remaining to determine the final four, is a fan of all the Valvoline products used by his team.

"I've used nothing but Valvoline in all my own race cars since 1994," said Beckman. "I use Valvoline in my (Super Comp) tow vehicle and in my passenger cars and have done that more than a dozen years. And it's very easy to support a company that you feel that passionately about their product and their people. And I'm sure that is also why more top mechanics choose Valvoline."

For Beckman, having this competitive advantage at the race track is just as important. "At 8000 horsepower in the Funny Car, our Valvoline gets changed every run as the engine is torn apart. In my passenger car I always change mine every 3000 miles."

His crew chiefs Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara also swear by Valvoline. "By using Valvoline products, we have found that there is less parts damage, in particular as far as piston scuffing goes, and the bearings look better," said Shuler, lead crew chief on the Valvoline/MTS Dodge.

"What's also great is that, while we haven't needed the extra attention because the oil has worked so well, Valvoline and their on-site technicians are willing to do whatever it takes to make their product the best. If they can't help on-site, they will get you in touch with engineers and other technical support."

"We are privileged to have a company such as Valvoline support the team," said team owner Don Schumacher, whose three Funny Car teams are seeded in the top four of the new Countdown to Four points rankings. "The quality of its products is unsurpassed, and I believe they helped provide that extra edge that put all three teams into the top four."

Knowing the peculiar demands of an 8000-hp power plant is a help as the Valvoline team searches for the racer’s Holy Grail: power. And putting that power to the ground while protecting a $70,000 engine from mechanical failure due to heat and oil viscosity breakdown is what drives Valvoline technicians to develop superior products.

"Developing motor oil for high-horsepower nitro-fueled cars is an interesting challenge,” said Dan Dotson, Lab Manager of the Valvoline Technology Group. “Race engines produce an enormous amount of horsepower and operate in extreme environments. For the race team we have to create new innovative synthetic racing lubricants, knowing that they do not have to meet current automaker or API specs. That frees us up to see which basestocks and additives perform best in this particular race engine.”

In 2006, the Dallas NHRA event at the Texas Motorplex was Beckman's first national event driving for Don Schumacher Racing. He qualified 15th and lost the first round to Tommy Johnson Jr. In the next four events, he went on to set both top-speed and elapsed-time nationals records, qualify No. 1 once, reach two final rounds, and score one victory.
