BAZEMORE RACES MATCO RAIL TO NO. 4 SPOT AT RICHMOND

PETERSBURG, Va. (Oct. 6, 2007) – Whit Bazemore raced his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to the No. 4 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Virginia Motorsports Park as he looks to sneak into the final spot in the Countdown to One. The 20-time NHRA winner clocked a qualifying-best run of 4.574-seconds to finish fourth in the 16-car order.

Bazemore entered the final day of qualifying for the Richmond event ranked second in the Top Fuel order after clocking a pass of 4.574-seconds on Friday’s only attempt. The Matco Tools team stayed consistent on Saturday’s first qualifying effort. The Bend , Ore. resident drove to run of 4.603 seconds at 320.74 mph under cloudy skies at V.M.P. Bazemore then raced the Matco-backed rail to a solid run of 4.576 at 320.89 to finish fourth in the field. It was the third quickest run of the session. Bazemore was the only driver to post 320 mph speeds on all three qualifying attempts. This is the sixth time that he has qualified fourth this season.

“We’re really happy,” Bazemore said. “We have a good, consistent race car. We went down the track on all three runs and ran well. Sometimes that’s more important than having low E.T. We have to win the race to maintain our championship dreams. Tomorrow we’re going to come here and do what we know how to do and that’s win.”

Bazemore will match-up against Melanie Troxel when the first round of eliminations begin at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday. He is 1-0 versus her this season. ESPN2 will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage from the Second annual Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at 7 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 7.
