POMONA, Ca. --NHRA POWERade Funny Car driver Mike Ashley turned in one of his most consistent outings of 2006 behind the wheel of the Knoll Gas – Torco Racing Fuels Nitro Funny Car Funny Car. Ashley used this banner performance during the final day of qualifying for the NHRA AAA Auto Club Finals to qualify in the eighth position.
Ashley produced a best 4.730 elapsed time at over 331 miles per hour during Saturday’s third qualifying session. He followed up the tremendous effort with a 4.731 in the final attempt.
Ashley’s 331.85 represented the fastest speed throughout the first three sessions and was within one mile per hour of the fastest Top Fuel dragster.
“Consistency wins races and my crew chief Brian Corradi has this Knoll Gas – Torco Race Fuels Nitro Funny Car running as consistent as a bracket car,” Ashley said. “I feel really good about our chances on Sunday.
“We never came out with the intention of rotating the earth. We only wanted to be consistently quick. I think we nailed that objective throughout qualifying.”
Ashley’s previous best run came during Thursday’s opening session when he reeled off a 4.762, 328.38.
Ashley will meet a familiar foe in the opening round of Sunday’s final eliminations – Tony Pedregon. The last time they faced off was in Richmond Virginia and their match – of which Ashley won - produced a margin of victory of less than .006.
