LAS VEGAS -- On Friday evening during the NHRA ACDelco Nationals, Mike Ashley’s Knoll Gas – Torco Race Fuels made the field solidly but crew chief Brian Corradi admitted they left a bit on the table. Saturday’s final effort resulted in no leftovers.
Ashley thundered to a 4.725 with a personal speed best 331.36 for the fifth quickest lap during the weekend’s quickest and fastest session.
“How about Brian Corradi? Is he awesome or what?” Ashley asked. “My team has done just a great job out here. Yesterday we had to basically take what the track would give us. In the early part there wasn’t a lot but each run it gave more and each time we took as much as we could get.”
Ashley opened with a tire-smoker on Friday and after that the odds fell into his favor. The evening session yielded a 4.787, 326.71.
The track continued to improve and Ashley took advantage of the situation by stepping it up to a 4.764, 324.98.
“You can’t get greedy but you can get aggressive,” Ashley said. “The teams that win know that fine line. Brian knew exactly where to go and this car responded. Tomorrow will be another day but I’m confident that we have a great deal of momentum headed into the first round.”
Ashley will race Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations.
