Which one is the best,Im thinkin of norton or Macafee,I heard norton slows ur computer down alot tho???????

Norton SUCKS I have to uninstall it on people's PC's on average of 2-3 times per day to fix problems that IT caused, McAfee is not much better. Plus they don't catch shit.

Try this: AVG Free Advisor: Free anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware tools

They also make a paid-for version, biggest difference is that the paid version provides email-based tech support. They also have an "all-in-one" security suite that is the same price as Norton but it gives you two years and doesn't really slow your PC down: AVG Anti-Virus and Internet Security - AVG Internet Security

I had used hacked version (keygen) of kasparsky anti virus pro for ages. it was lite, fast. and it updated ok. made the msitake recently of "updating" to my internet providers free version of McAcne anti virus and email scan and firewall. yep. it slowed down every computer we have.

EDIT. I had Norton norks on one of my machines back in 96. i swore never to ever use any software made by norton for the rest of my life.

Kasparsky is also very good, but the interface is not as good as AVG.

.........I have to agree with Sam, I have the payed version of AVG

Right now I am using the free edition but I will have to shell out for AVG Internet Security when I build my new comp as the free edition doesn't have 64-bit support.

Well Norton used to be good, I used it back in '02, but never again.

Unfortunately, Norton and McAfee are very similar, and not in a good way. Here's why, these are issue I frequently come across:

When they expire, they get venomous. Even when they don't expire, I have noticed these issues (same when they expire) with them:

Massive slowdown. Some people have reporting putting Norton Internet Security on brand new Core 2 Duo PCs and they act like 6 year old P4's. Once the software is removed, system runs like a champ.

Norton and McAfee say they can be put on a PC that has 256mb of RAM but that is not true, trust me. Both actually require 512mb to run right otherwise it will be like trying to drive your car with the parking brake on.

Norton is telling people they can put Norton Internet Security and Systemworks Basic on the same machine. FALSE! The issue is that both programs fight over the same files and really slow things down and cause other issues. Every time, I remove Systemworks and the issues largely clear up.

Both softwares have a habit of suddenly taking away your access to secure sites and blocking 3rd party browsers, and there is no other way of changing it other than removing the software.

I get some people who refuse to let me remove the software even though it's clearly causing the issue and they all say the same crap: "Don't remove it, I paid for that!" What do I do? Tell them to back up their stuff and call back so we can erase their hard drive and reload Windows, that usually shuts them up and lets me continue on with my troubleshooting.

Great I just bought a new dell with 15 months macafee, lol. guess ill try it and see what happens

I use Computer Associates. Norton works fine without slowdown if it is properly configured and if you do not run the internet security crap. The proper place for a firewall is between your machine you are trying to protect and the internet, not on that machine...

Disable network scanning and enter the exclusions appropriate for your setup and Norton works just fine for anti-virus. I have had historically bad luck with most other products spaning a variety of operating environments, individual machine profiles, and network configurations.

I'm not a big fan of Norton or McAfee either. I've been using Trend Micro products for about 7 years on my personal machines. It's been flawless until the current version, Internet Security 2007, with which I'm having some issues with on my laptop but not my desktop. Their tech support has been excellent in the past, hopefully they'll help me get the bug worked out today. Other than this little inconvenience I've had great luck with their stuff.

I finally got fed up with Norton's extortion tactics and switched my desktop computer to the free edition of AVG when Norton started its "time to renew" song and dance - no complaints so far. It updates daily, so it should stay pretty current. The only bad thing is that the virus scan slows the computer down noticeably, but they all do that, at least the ones I've used (Norton and McAfee) do. I guess that's why you schedule virus scans for 2 am???

There is a very nice free anti-virus software available here:

Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic

Free virus protection for Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP
and for Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris

Norton Sux! Plain and Simple!
I use AVG and also have Spyware Doctor installed as well.
Since installing these two, I have NEVER had a slow-down, virus, spy-ware invasion, or problem of any kind. They seamlessly run memory resident in the background and they update every day with new protections.

OH, did I say, NORTON SUX!

I tried that once, didn't like it.

I've had it for several years with no issues at all. Runs very nicely in the background..updates daily without a hitch and protects viciously.

And oh..Doc's right about Norton..the most invasive piece of software that can be installed. (same category as AOL..hehe)

The AVG runs well on Vista, I'm pretty impressed with it. I run it on my laptop and don't have it interfere and slow down my start up like McAfee would on my older laptop.

I have a GB of hard drive on my desktop (non-vista) and Norton still slows it way down. The woman who gave me the desktop had installed Norton on it and she paid for two years. She gave me the computer when it was only 3 months old and had nothing other than the virus software and a screen saver installed. She never used anything else on it.

We have a computer maintenance company here in the Phoenix that offers personal computer remote maintenance for a monthly fee. They are very successful with professionals/businesses/individuals with about 15000 current clients and an excellent satisfaction rate.

The first thing they do with a new client's computer at the onset is delete everything from Norton or McAfee then they install the free version of AVG anti-virus for superior results.

Quick follow-up - I submitted a case using their online form, got an automated return email nearly instantly (big surprise ;) ) then got a "live" email a few hours later with a link an instructions to uninstall / reinstall using the file from the provided link. 4 days with the new install and everything's working well.
