I realize there might not be a tremendous load on the drivetrain during the burnout, but if a wheel or an axle were to fail...the result will be MUCH worse than the TPed crewman lifting the body.
Flame away...

Then how about the camera man?

Or the cc who makes final adjustments on the motor?

Or the crewman who raises the FC body?

Drag racing itself is a dangerous sport, and, for the most part, it is participated by free-thinking adults who have an idea that things may go wrong.

It doesn't need to be ruled into extinction like the effort being made on our free will.

I agree. For a long time I've been against ANYONE being in front of a car. That includes the "back-up"guy. He / she should be behind the wall, not on the track.

With todays in car communication we no longer need the visual guide, works for Jeg's team.

There are many "waiting to happen" dangers while we're at it. One of my biggest complaints is the Fooling with wheelie bars as the car stages.

Just imagine some poor crewman getting his hand or clothing caught and being draged a half mile in front of 30,000 fans........Not the kind of press our sport needs.

This practice needs to be stopped BEFORE it happens.

You guys need to give up watching drag racing and take up watching ping pong :D:eek:

Ping Pong is far too dangerous considering it is played with an object deemed by the Feds to be a potential choking hazard, moving at high velocity; eye injuries; carpal tunnel; etc.

Leave me with the safe sport of drag racing. :)

Anyone reading this thread needs to go to the the "I'm Pi$$ed Zippy Said Pi$$ed" thread. For the love of god people, this sport has been around for a long time and I don't think a thread stating that there is an accident waiting to happen is going to make everybody stop and say "Huh, maybe drag racing is a dangerous sport". As a matter of fact they are going to laugh and say "when's the next race". Stop looking for subjects to start a thread about, let's just talk about who won last weeks race or speculate who will win the next one and let these guys (adrenaline junkies) do their jobs that they have chosen to do. Kinda like a firefighter going into a burning building, when is someone going to start a thread about being a firefighter is an accident waiting to happen, they could have something fall on them and burn to death or they could get caught in a stairwell and be trapped with no way out. They chose their career as has all the crew men and drivers of these Dragsters, funny cars and PS cars. Hope I don't piss anybody off.

Why speak your mind and then apologize for something you believe in? That peeves me. :D :p

WHOA!! Just to make sure we are clear... the thread is titled WHO's Pi$$ed that Zippy said "Pi$$ed"

I created it in fun as I knew some people would get up on the tires about it. I wasn't upset about Mikes interview in any way.

Anthony that post was great, it does seem like people stretch to come up with an idea for a new thread. There are more ways for something to go wrong than we can ever think of, especially in or around race cars, so either we don't sweat it or stay home.

Do Firefighters still ride to a fire hanging on the outside of the truck? Do they still use a regular ladder to get into a second or third story of a building?
No and No, unless you live in BFE USA.
They know the dangers involved in what they do but they also try to be as safe as they can in what they do being a firefighter.
I think the point of this thread was to show how even the crew can be a little more safe in what they do. I think the same thing when I see them standing a foot away from a car coming through doing a burnout that could turn in a second and clip them.

Did any of you actually study the picture Mike used to start this thread carefully? There is absolutely no reason for the crew guy to still have his foot in front of the car at that point in the burnout.

By this moment, all the driver can see is maybe the guy's torso; certainly not his foot in the desired groove. He serves no purpose unless he becomes a human speed bump if he should get twisted up while trying to retract his limb.

Mendenhall has been strapped into more race cars than some of you have had warm meals, so shut up and listen. You might learn something.

Forget about the title and simply LOOK at the picture. Is this really necessary? Is the driver incapable of driving in a straight line? (sarcasm). The car is not idling toward him, it's accelerating!
I guess the young guy will be able to jump out of the way if "something" happens huh?

I remember the old days when guys thought it was cool to warm up the rearends with the car on the floor jack only and facing the tow vehicle. I guess it was my imagination that some cars ended up in the back of said tow vehicle...that "had" people in it.

My original title of the thread was going to be "This is just F*&#ing stupid" but decided on the G-rated version instead. My bad.

this has bugged me for years !! how nhra allows someone to stand in front of a hi powered race car while its moving forward is beyond me ! of course as soon as someone's legs are broken or killed then i'm sure the rule will be put in place !!

Because "IT IS PART OF THE SHOW"

Hey, I'm one of those people that stand in front of the cars! Anybody want to hear what I think?

Too bad :)

I know there is danger out there. I also know that there is much more danger trying to cross Highway 47. I trust my driver, I trust the track crew, and I trust above all, the Good Lord to keep me safe.

I have a reason for doing what I do up there. I check for leaks, I check for visability, I check track conditions, I check for stuff that can keep drivers safe. I guide the line, the driver can't see how much tire smoke he's producing and if there's too much smoke in the compartment, he can't see and it takes time to clear out the car so he can see. So if I signal him when the tires are just smokey enough, it cuts down on the smoke in the car and doesn't hold up the show. Which might eliminate something else for the fans to ***** about.

We sign a wavier before we can go up there. We are responsible for ourselves.

There are good rules of thumbs, never turn your back on a running race car, which is why you'll see me back up facing both the car on the line and the car in the burn out box. Use your senses, listen, you'd be surpised what you can hear break when your senses are tip top because of adreniline. And for God's sake, be ready to get out of the way.

KNOW the procedure and every other guy you have out there's procedure have signals if you must deviate from the procedure in such a case where you must approach the car. Decide what is really necessary. If I am going to shoot the tires with the temp gun, the drivers know ahead of time and I don't dwadle, if the gun doesn't work, I don't stand there and fiddle with. I got one shot. If I need to approach the car because I see a problem like a fastener I can easily fix, I have a signal.

We aren't going out there to fool around.
