Alcohol Funny Car (17 Viewers)

I've waited for what seems like forever for NHRA to allow Injected Nitro Funny Cars into this class. Imagine, being able to buy good used equipment from the big show cars and running the same set of rods all year and not changing valve springs every race. This low rpm leave off idle engine package is a dragstrip promoters dream. 16 injected nitro cars that run 5.50s at 260+ all day long and don't oil down the track! This is the class where the next generation of fuel cars will come from. I saw it happen in the 70s with the UDRA Midwest injected nitro circuit. Al Fontanini running the first 6.99. These cars need to be promoted by NHRA and NOT restricted by rules.

Hate to break it to you, AFC has been NHRA legal for three years, and there are barely four legal cars in the country at this point. I don't know if you can even get a 16 car BBFC field anymore with the rules changes and high costs pushing more and more teams into "retirement".

I agree with some of your points but the Killer bees ran quicker on more nitro percentage. the AA/FC fields are getting less and less cars to make a full fields and same with Alky funny cars. In my opinion if you give the Injected funny car's the same rules as the AA/FC And AA/FD (lock up clutches Etc.) and more percentage than now, you would see many more cars built and running 4 second and 300+ MPH in 1320 FT. The AA/FD and AA/FD and Alky classes are dying due to cost. It is time for a new look at changing the Alky classes to injected fuel. Plus there are many of nostalgia teams would switch IMOP.

The parts from a big show Nitro car are not the same as an Injected Nitro car. For instance, if Randy Meyer or Rich McPhillips decided to race Top Fuel instead of A/Fuel the only engine part they could reuse is the Mag Drive.

You can race an injected nitro funny car cheaper than Pro stock, Pro Mod, and any blown alcohol car. Adjust the rules and big show parts have a new market as things get even cheaper. 500 inches should do it. 5 teens at 275. A promoters dream! Who would be first in the 4's.

Richard,

I agree with your theory, and if you allowed 500 CI in the A/Fuel some of what you say would be true. But, because you need much more compression the cylinder heads are different. Pistons would also be different, but they are basically maintenance items so that's not really an issue. The optimal bore and stroke would also be different for a non-boosted combination so cylinder sleeves and crank would not exchange.

Look at it like this. You can buy used parts they will work, but I can buy new parts which are specifically designed for the application. Who do you think will win?
