There may be some drivers that have not procured the sponsorship deal themselves, but they do bring their name and public image. Sometimes a sponsor will go with a team because of the driver and what that specific driver can do for the sponsor's brand.
There are many factors that go into a sponsorship deal. The owner, driver, tuner, location of the team, friend of a friend, desires of the sponsor, and a host of other reasons. It is a strange game, and if finding sponsors was easy there would be more teams out there racing.
Another thing to consider is just because there is a brand name on the side of the car and transporter, that doesn't always mean it's big money.
I send out proposals, network as much as possible, and even cold call. I usually bang my head against a wall in frustration. It's a sickness, as every trip to the grocery store is filled with visions of products on the side of a race cars. The game goes on, and fighting the sponsorship search will continue.
