Actual "hired guns"?

Take in consideration that most current pro drivers are already wealthy. How many hired guns are in the pro ranks these days? I'm talking about a shoe that does not contribute a dime to the team.

David Grubnic
Ron Capps
Clay Millican
Khalid Balooshi
Shawn Langdon
Cory Mac
Troy Buff
Mike Neff
Jeff Arend

Then there is the grey area of family members of team owners...All very capable drivers who just happen to be related to the owners that pay them.

Tony Schumacher
Courtney Force
Robert Hight
Doug Kalitta

I really believe the answer is 0. It seems most drivers who ever get to drive anymore have to buy the team for a race or the season. Like Tuttle who has strict give me a check you can drive it system. I really cant think of any solo or multicar team that has a driver that has not wrote a check first.

my count is 13 for the pro classes

TF - Langdon/ Balooshi/Brown/Bernstein/Grubnic

FC - Beckman / Capps /hight/Arend / Neff

PS - Anderson /Line/Nobile/

not sure about Hagen and Massey, i thought i read somewhere that they both contribute to the funding of the team

not sure if i consider the owners kin, a true hired driver but technically i guess it is !!.

That's absolutely correct with what you wrote. I am thinkin purely who is new and gets paid to drive currently instead of just writing a check. I don't think your grey area guys are getting paid much, I think it may be more of a make sure I have everything I need to live comfortably since family looks out for family.

I think I found 1 current racer who did not write a check to drive. Grace Howell.

Not sure I would include Anderson/Line on the list. They may have been instrumental in bringing Ken Black in as the owner and later Summit. Also, unlike the rest of the guys on the list, they do substantial work tuning and in the shop on their cars.

There may be some drivers that have not procured the sponsorship deal themselves, but they do bring their name and public image. Sometimes a sponsor will go with a team because of the driver and what that specific driver can do for the sponsor's brand.

There are many factors that go into a sponsorship deal. The owner, driver, tuner, location of the team, friend of a friend, desires of the sponsor, and a host of other reasons. It is a strange game, and if finding sponsors was easy there would be more teams out there racing.

Another thing to consider is just because there is a brand name on the side of the car and transporter, that doesn't always mean it's big money.

I send out proposals, network as much as possible, and even cold call. I usually bang my head against a wall in frustration. It's a sickness, as every trip to the grocery store is filled with visions of products on the side of a race cars. The game goes on, and fighting the sponsorship search will continue.

Btw...anyone wanting to sponsor a Nitro car, multiple Top Alcohol Dragsters, or a Pro Stock Motorcycle please private message me! :D

Of course I have no proof, but I would venture to say that D. Kalitta doesn't fall into the "not contributing a dime" column. There's probably some kind of two way contribution going on, like with the cost of the race plane, fuel, pilot expenses or something like that. That's a formidable expense for a race team or anybody else for that matter, to have an aircraft and pay people to fly it to every race and test session, plus to undoubtedly take advantage of your fuel purchasing discounts. Plus the more you fly the thing, the more scheduled maintenance you have to do...... and everything I just mentioned, C. & D. Kalitta are pretty damn successful at.
