Yep, big show. But, I'm watching now on ESPN3, and those stands look pretty empty during Q2 of fuel classes.

The explanations were that it was too hot in Texas, too cold in PA, too off the beatin path for Firebird. So what is it this week? Too dry?

Will anyone admit that the economy is having an impact on attendance?

forget attendance for a second and lets think of the 27 top fuelers, thats cool. Thats a decent number actually. I wonder how many currently active top fuelers there are?

The explanations too cold in PA,

The problem with attendance and interest in the sport is the NHRA has deified and made into saints certain fuel class hero drivers to the exclusion of the backbone of the sport: the sportman classes.

The NHRA's not trying to engender interest in our sport, they're trying to sell batteries and filters and gosh knows what. Because they have a big chunk of that dough.

Hmm. Sound like any other group of people you might know about?

They've trained the casual fan to run and train their phone camera on the trailers of Force or Massey or Dixon or Beckman, in the hopes they peek out of their trailers and grace us with five minutes of autographs.

I can remember when they didn't cordon off the fans from the teams and you could literally reach out and touch our heroes.

You could watch them sweat and bleed and swear over a motor trying to make the call for the next round.

And don't give me the comparative analogy of NASCAR or other even more removed motor sports. Just because they're clueless doesn't mean we have to follow them. Does it?

The NHRA has successfully instructed any fan under the age of forty that all they consider important about the sport are the rock stars.

And if I hear one more driver start puking out a laundry list of sponsors during an interview, I'm going to scream. Hey robots! The decals are on the side of your car. Do you think we're all blind?

For heck's sake, tell us something about the run you just made on fire at 320mph. You think we might be interested in hearing about that?

Sheesh.

Or are you just angling for sufficient face time whoring your sponsor so you keep your ride next year?

What the hell happened to the non-manufactured personalities in this sport? Where are the Al Hoffman's? Where are the Jungle Jim's? ... where in the heck are the REAL rivalries?

Why does everything corporate have to snake its way into venerable institutions and turn them into a commercial?

Holy Schnikes. I've got foamy spittle in both corners of my mouth.

Forgive me, I rant because I care, people.

And we can't expect the NHRA to grow with the current administration installed. Ain't gonna happen.

Over and out.

The main section of the Grand Stands seats 18,000 the upper section is just over 3000. so keep that in mind. The crowd count was very good for Friday, Sunday reserved are sold out only like 1200 left for today. And everyone that sits at home and watches on ESPN3 don't help the crowd count.

Yeah, that was some great qualifying. Folks I have never heard of. As for the crowd? NHRA needs to get more creative if their tickets aren't selling. It's not our problem it's their's. From what i read on DRO they are handing it by having another round of layoffs.
