Center Line, Mich. — The Mopar® Big Block Party in downtown Golden, Colo., traditionally kicks off the annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals. Scheduled for Thursday, July 12, from 6 to 10 p.m. MDT, the Mopar Big Block Party will get the party started like never before, leading up to the Mopar Mile-High Nationals, this year set for July 13-15, at Bandimere Speedway.

The Mopar Big Block Party will feature a new attraction for 2007, the “Mopar Rumble in the Rapids.” Team Mopar NHRA POWERade drivers such as Gary Scelzi, Richie Stevens Jr., Allen Johnson and Ron Capps will compete in a just-for-fun rubber raft race down Clear Creek in Golden, replacing HEMI®-power with hydro power to determine who is fastest away from the track.

As in previous years, a large roster of NHRA stars will sign autographs for fans at the Mopar Big Block Party. Drivers scheduled to participate include Gary Scelzi, Allen Johnson, Richie Stevens Jr., Ron Capps, Jack Beckman, Erica Enders, V. Gaines, Max Naylor, Angelle Sampey and Antron Brown. Former NHRA Pro Stock driver and current Team Mopar Formula Drift team owner and manager Shaun Carlson will also participate at the event.

NHRA announcer Bob Frey will serve as emcee of the event. Frey will interview Mopar representatives and Team Mopar drivers on the Mopar Big Block stage. The festivities will also include the reveal of a special Mopar Mile-High Nationals paint scheme for Gary Scelzi’s Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car. Frey will then turn things over to Chicago cover band Maggie Speaks. The band, a favorite with the Golden crowd, will rock the Mopar Big Block Party for the third year in a row.

‘Mopar Rumble in The Rapids’ details
The Mopar Big Block Party is known for its unique events. Last year, Gary Scelzi was ordained as a minister and officiated the wedding ceremony of a Mopar-crazed couple on the Big Block stage. This year, Scelzi will also be front-and-center in the Big Block hi-jinks, as the man known as “Wild Thing” will compete along with other Team Mopar drivers in the “Mopar Rumble in The Rapids.”

The novel event will take place from 6:30 to 6:50 p.m. MDT during the Big Block Party, on the rapids of Clear Creek in Golden, Colo. NHRA drivers such as Scelzi, Stevens, Johnson and Capps will trade their HEMI-powered race cars for rubber rafts as the Team Mopar drivers do battle for the Clear Creek Cup.

Transferring their competitive natures from the drag strip to the water, the “Mopar Rumble in The Rapids” competitors will work hard to make the show a good one. Mopar fans will not want to miss the opportunity to see if their favorite Team Mopar drivers can move the paddles as fast as they can hit the pedals.

70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Originally used in the 1920s, Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It was also widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s – the muscle car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of “Special Parts” for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

Today, the Chrysler Group’s Global Service & Parts division is responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of nearly 250,000 authentic Mopar replacement parts, components and accessories for Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge vehicles sold around the world. To assure quality, reliability and durability, all Mopar parts and accessories are designed in strict adherence to DaimlerChrysler engineering standards.
