2025 NHRA Nationals at The Rock Recap: Inaugural event

Pre-Race Notes:

  • J.R. Todd enters the NHRA Nationals at The Rock in fifth place in the NHRA Funny Car point standings. He trails fourth-place Ron Capps by six points and leads sixth-place Austin Prock by 40 points.
  • Last week in Martin, Mich., Todd opened the Countdown to the Championship NHRA Playoffs qualifying fifth and reaching the semifinals.
  • Todd competed in Rockingham during the early days of his career when he raced in IHRA competition more than 20 years ago, but he has not been to Rockingham Dragway since then.
  • Todd advanced to at least the semifinals nine times this season. He has one win, one runner-up finish and seven semifinal showings in addition to three No. 1 qualifiers this season.
  • Todd is the 2018 NHRA Funny Car Champion and has 23 race wins in his career.

Pre-Race Quotes:

“I would say reaching the semifinals in Martin was kind of bittersweet because it’s good to go to the later rounds, but we also lost ground to cars in front of us. We’re gonna have to keep pace with those in front of us which means putting ourselves in a better position to win the race. We just need to run harder when the times call for it

“You never know if we’ll see conditions like we had in Martin again this season. Pomona can be good; anywhere we go could be just as good because it’s just a matter of what the weather is gonna be. I don’t know exactly what it’ll take, but we have to keep running hard from here on out – there’s no letting up.

“These Countdown races are more exciting because the intensity rises so I think everybody takes it to a different level this time of year. Every run down the track matters so there’s no time for screwing around. Like I said, we gotta be aggressive from here on out.”
