Doug Kalitta, Mac Tools Top Fuel Dragster
Finals Broadcast Replay (eastern time): 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 on FS1
Qualifying: Doug Kalitta was the No. 1 qualifier at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. His best qualifying attempt came in the first session Saturday afternoon, the first round of the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge, when he made a 3.872-second pass at 313.29 mph. In the final round of qualifying later that afternoon, he won his second-straight Mission Foods Challenge and his fourth of the season.
Eliminations: Kalitta defeated Josh Hart and Tony Schumacher before losing to Antron Brown in the semifinals. It was a close race until Kalitta’s Mac Tools dragster smoked the tires. Kalitta pedaled, but the blower belt broke when he got back on the throttle, and the Mac Tools dragster could only coast to the finish line.
Unofficial Point Standings: Kalitta leaves Bristol in second place in the NHRA Top Fuel point standings. He trails first place Shawn Langdon by 114 points and leads third-place Leah Pruett by 112 points.
Kalitta on Bristol: “Unfortunately, we smoked the tires in the semifinals, and it probably wasn’t the greatest reaction time. It’s just one of those deals – it wasn’t meant to be today. We obviously have another shot at the Mission Foods Challenge at the next race. We’ll lick our wounds, figure out what we need to do and go to the next one at Norwalk.”
