WORSHAM'S 4.897 IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR No. 3... AND A SMILE

Del Worsham knew it was a big run. He knew the night session in Denver would be yet another in a long string of "do or die" deals, and with a large contingent of CSK Auto employees attending the race, the "do" part was very important. After joining the majority of the Funny Car class by smoking the tires in Q1, Worsham put it on the line in Q2, aiming to run a solid number, and he came up aces. His 4.897 earned him the No. 3 spot after one day, and his 318.09 mph velocity was top speed on the day.

"You don't get to say this too often in the Funny Car class, but it ran almost exactly what we were trying to run," Worsham said. "As a matter of fact, my dad told one of the CSK guys, right before the run, that we would run between 4.88 and 4.91, so there you have it. It was really a nice pass, at a very critical time for us. We don't have much cushion, in terms of picking up the points chase to get in the top eight, and the Friday night runs are going to be huge from here on out. We overstepped it a little on the first run, probably trying to run a 4.89 on what was then a 4.95 race track, so we had to really be focused on not chickening out and not backing it down too far tonight. I think we did okay.

"What we've had, for quite a few races now, is a really fast race car.

We've just been working hard at finding the limits with it, and I know we've made some mistakes, but the problems we've had haven't been performance related at all. I'm just really glad we were able to come out here tonight and do that. It gives the guys a lift, and it gives the driver a lift too."
