WORSHAM'S 1-FOR-2 LANDS HIM 12th AFTER TWO SESSIONS

There are two different ways to go 1-for-2 during a typical Friday qualifying schedule (one daytime run, one under the lights) and it's not surprising Del Worsham would have been happy to reverse the order of his two laps on this first day of qualifying in Memphis. In Q1, Worsham's solid 4.920 was good enough for the No. 6 spot on the grid, and was only 5-thousandths of a second short of the No. 3 spot (which was held by his teammate, Jeff Arend). In the nightcap, Worsham's car smoked the tires at nearly the hit of the throttle, while a number of other teams were stepping up to very big runs, and he ended the day in the No. 12 position.

"Just too much on the second one, that's all there is to it," Worsham said. "Over the years, you could probably make a good case for saying the one shortfall we have on the big Friday night 'hero sessions' is that we're consistently a little too conservative, maybe a little afraid of going for a big one and getting nothing instead. This time, we wanted to be a bit more aggressive, and I won't deny we were thinking of the top spot because both of our Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Impalas have been running really well lately. We obviously went just a little too far with it, and overpowered the track.

"We'll have to see what the weather gives us on Saturday, because it's supposed to be sunny and quite a bit cooler. The sunny part won't help, but if we can get some of the heat and humidity out of here, we should be able to run a mid-4.80 of some sort. And you know, now that we went ahead and got aggressive on that run, and got over-center on it, we'll probably be guilty of being a bit too conservative on Friday night the next time around. Who knows, though, it's Dallas next week and it's hard to be conservative there."
