WORSHAM GOES 1 FOR 2, SLIPS TO 7th SPOT

Del Worsham managed a solid full lap in the heat of the afternoon Saturday, which was a major accomplishment on this day, but failed to negotiate the full 1,320 under the lights, smoking the tires near half-track. Only Jack Beckman and Mike Ashley, however, were able to move around Worsham's 4.785 from Friday, so the red Checker, Schuck's, Kragen driver only slipped two notches on the ladder, to the 7th spot.

Two more sessions, both daytime affairs, are scheduled for Sunday.

"If you would've come up to me before that night session and told me we'd smoke the tires, and then asked where I thought we'd end up, I probably would have said 15th or 16th," Worsham said. "I thought it would be absolutely killer out there, but the air just wasn't quite as good as most of us thought it would be. Once I started seeing some really big hitters run 4.80s or high 4.70s, I figured things weren't going to change that much. As for our run, at this point I'm taking the blame for this one. We had a pretty aggressive clutch set-up in the car, and it hiked the front end up leaving, and that contributed to me letting the car get over to the right a little and out of the groove. I don't think we smoked the tires because we overpowered the track, we just got over there in the marbles and it blew them off.

"Tomorrow is supposed to be a little warmer, and both of the sessions are set for the daytime, so we'll just concentrate on a race day set-up and measure ourselves against everyone else. I know one team we're not measuring up to, though. Our blue team is just doing an incredible job here. Jeff is still number one going into Sunday, and that's awesome.

I'm really proud of those guys."
