WORSHAM WALKS AWAY FROM HORRIFIC CRASH, REMAINS No. 1

Del Worsham ran as part of the final pair in today's Funny Car session, and was aiming to repeat his stellar performance from Thursday, when his motor let loose near the finish line, buckling his CSK Monte Carlo badly enough to make it impossible to deploy his parachutes. Worsham's car scraped against the retaining wall twice, though it lost precious little speed on its way to the sand trap and catch fences beyond the end of the track. When the car impacted the sand, still at a high rate of speed, the nose of the car dug in, flipping the car end-over-end. It eventually landed atop the first catch fence, then somersaulted again, finally landing beyond the second fence. Before the dust had settled, Worsham was walking away from the wreck under his own power.

After being checked by the emergency crew at the scene, Worsham was transported to Pomona General Hospital for observation and x-rays. He was complaining about a sore tail bone, and upon arrival at the hospital it was discovered he also had some minor cuts to the shin area. At the time of this report, the x-rays on his tail bone had not been completed, though Worsham did provide the following comments:

"I'm sore, but I'm more bummed than hurt, I think," Worsham said. "It just blew up down there, and there was no way to get my hand to the parachute lever, so I was pretty much along for the ride. The body had buckled so much, I really couldn't see anything, so I didn't even know where I was or where I was headed. When it hit the sand, it dug in, I guess, and that's when it vaulted up in the air. I knew I was in the air, because it got totally quiet, for what seemed like a long time. When it came down, it hit hard and at that point I was just trying to keep my arms in tight so nothing would be flailing around. I was mostly worried about getting my arms broken, so I kept them in tight.

"When it finally stopped tumbling, I just got out and walked away from it, already mad about what had happened. Here we are, still the No. 1 qualifier and we're running great, and this has to happen. My tail bone is sore, so we're just going to take it easy and see how I feel. Right now, I'm just really bummed out about all of this and I just want to go home. Hopefully, the x-rays will be okay and we'll see how I feel. I know the team is already preparing the back-up car, so we'll just have to see."
