Del Worsham didn't have much luck on Saturday in Atlanta, but this time his talent, execution, and determination from Friday night were more than enough to carry the day. During Saturday's Q3, no one came close to the 4.858 Worsham put on the board Friday during Q3 (no one even ran in the 4.8s during that session) and although a pair of 4.86s were posted during Q4, the top seven slots on the ladder remained untouched and Worsham's hard-earned 6th spot remained. For the record, Worsham made a full lap during his first Saturday pass, but dropped a cylinder just beyond the 330 mark and slowed to a 5.068. He then smoked the tires in his final attempt.
He will face Ashley Force in round one. Worsham is 2-2, lifetime, against Ms. Force, including a victory over her in the final round, just two races ago.
"We had a pretty good tune-up in it for the first pass today, but it put that hole out on us pretty early and we weren't going to run in the 4.90s on seven cylinders," Worsham said. "We wanted to come back on the last one and find the edge, or find the edge of the edge, in that lane, but there's a bump out there and it just unloaded the tires going over it. We're in the top half, so we'll have lane choice in the morning. We'll just have to see how the Top Fuel cars and whatever Funny Cars run ahead of us do, to see what the lane of choice is. It's not a deal where you can't get down the left lane, because we ran 4.85 over there on Friday, and there's a bit of a hop in both lanes, right there around 2-seconds into the run. But, there must be something about that area, or the track conditions right around it, that make it trickier in the heat. Everybody is going to have to be on their toes, and the teams that negotiate this deal will win the rounds tomorrow."
