WORSHAM POUNCES ON No. 2 SPOT

Like a cat stalking its prey, Del Worsham sat back and watched the first six pairs of Funny Cars take their shots in Friday night's "home run session" in Sonoma. When it was his turn to go, he'd seen a slew of mid-4.80s, as well as a 4.806 from Scott Kalitta and a 4.804 from Eric Medlen, and Worsham was ready to pounce. The CSK driver lined up beside Robert Hight, and the two simply erased all other bets on the board, as Hight demolished the competition with an immense 4.738, making him the overnight pole sitter, while Worsham clicked through the lights with a 4.803, putting him into the No. 2 spot.

"First of all, I'm really happy to be up in the No. 2 spot and there's absolutely nothing but smiles around here right now," Worsham said. "We could've run a 4.78 or 4.79 right there, but we messed up a little on the timing curve and left some on the table. That's kind of a 'who cares' deal though, because we'd still be No. 2 to Robert, who was obviously playing on a different field than the rest of us. You take his run out, and the whole field is bunched up like a Pro Stock field, with thousandths of a second separating the cars. That's what they do over there on Robert's car, though; they just go for it and hit a lot of home runs.

"I'd consider our lap one of the best we've made this season, and not just because it's second-best here after one day. The way things have been going for us, we really needed to get right out there and do something good today. We absolutely did not need a screw up on Friday night that left us dangling at the bottom of the field going into a pair of daylight runs tomorrow. We did that, and that's all good. We'll sleep a lot better tonight."
