Wilkerson was looking for a better start to the weekend

INDIANAPOLIS, Friday: Funny Car pro, Tim Wilkerson would have liked to have a better opening qualifying effort today at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, but a broken exhaust valve had the upper hand. The Levi, Ray & Shoup Impala SS struggled to get down the quarter-mile, posting a 5.202 at 289.20 mph, which put Wilkerson on the bump spot.

"We would have liked to do better on tonight's run," explained Wilkerson, "because it would have been a good place to start. We weren't looking to knock our head off, but were looking to run 4.80 flat or better. But when I hit the gas pedal, it broke an exhaust valve. And as soon as it did that, it was done. I drove it down through there anyway, just to get something.

"But anyway, we'll try again tomorrow, and hopefully we can get her in tomorrow night. I don't think much will happen during the day, it's just going to be testing your patience. So, tomorrow night is when the run's going to be, so we'll have to see how it works out."
