POMONA, Friday: Tim Wilkerson would have liked a better outing for his Levi, Ray & Shoup Funny Car today at the CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals. But Wilkerson made a tire-smoking pass of 8.835 seconds at 95.35 mph, which moved him down into the 17th slot after the second round of qualifying.
“We had just a little too much, I think,” said Wilkerson, “and we drove the tires off out there at about 150 feet. It was pretty close and it almost made it, whatever that’s good for. We had the quickest 60-foot time. It looks pretty good on the computer, but when it only goes that far there’s not much to look at. But I’m feeling good, because it was darn close to making it. And hopefully we can get it straightened out. I’m pretty darn optimistic because it was so close. We’ve got two runs tomorrow and with any luck we can get in the field and it will all be good to go.
