Wilkerson slays a giant and moves up in points

ENGLISHTOWN, Sunday: It was a beautiful day for racing at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park for the 38th running of the ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationals. Funny Car pro, Tim Wilkerson enjoyed the day as his Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevrolet Impala SS did just what he told it to do all day.

In one of the biggest upsets of the first-round, Wilkerson took out the points leader, Ron Capps with a 5.015 against Capps' 5.053.

"We thought we had a chance against Capps," said Wilkerson. "They put us in the right lane and it's really hard, boy. So, for the second round I reeled it back in a little bit to make sure I made it from one end to the other."

Wilkerson faced off against Jeff Arend in the second round. Both teams had to wait for the scoreboard to tell who won. The light went on in Arend's lane as he posted a 4.976 to Wilkerson's 5.053.

"We had a good race against Jeff," said Wilkerson, "we were just on the wrong side of it. I thought it would go a little bit faster, but I told the guys that if they run a four we won't beat them because ours was only going to go five flat. I really thought the track would be a lot worse, and only one other pair made it all the way down. We were just racing the wrong guy."

Qualifying and winning a round fit right into Wilkerson's plans of moving up in the point standings. He moved up to spots and now sits in the No. 13 slot.

"I'm telling you," Wilkerson explained, "if we go a round or two a weekend, by the time we get to Indy, we'll be in the top eight. That's what we need to do. There's a chance of it, we just need to stop screwing up."
