SONOMA, Saturday: Funny Car points leader, Tim Wilkerson made two more strong qualifying runs today at the Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway keeping his Levi, Ray & Shoup in the No. 8 position.

Wilkerson’s beautiful hot rod was a bracket car in today’s sessions laying down a 4.243 at 283.49 mph first and then following it up with a 4.244 at 271.24. Adding these runs to his 4.274 and 4.146 from yesterday, shows Wilkerson has a consistent race car. And if Wilkerson has a consistent car, the talented tuner and driver has the makings for a happy Sunday.

“We’ve got a good car,” said Wilkerson. “I like the way it’s coming around. I’d say we’re going down the right path. It was on a real nice run in the last qualifying, but it broke a valve. So, I’m optimistic that we should have a good day tomorrow.”

Being in the eighth spot will give Wilkerson lane choice tomorrow against his first-round opponent, the No. 9 guy, Gary Scelzi.

“I don’t think lane choice is a big deal, explained Wilkerson. “The left lane looks a little better than the right, but we went down both of them and it was nice and smooth. The biggest challenge for us is getting past first-round, and we’ve got to have Scelzi. Those guys can be tough. But I think we’re up to the challenge. We’ll have to see.”
