Pomona, Friday: For the second day at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, only one qualifying session was scheduled. Since, Tim Wilkerson was dealt a "bald" hand yesterday, he needed to make the most of today's opportunity.
Wilkerson did improve on today's pass, posting a 4.961 at 295.46 mph. And even though the Levi, Ray & Shoup Funny Car stepped up, the run was only good enough for the No. 18 qualifying position. With preparing for next year as his focus, Wilkerson is pleased with today's performance.
"The car is coming around," said Wilkerson. "It dropped a hole real early, so it doesn't have quite enough tune-up in it now. But it's going to be all right, because I'm sneaking up on it. It ran 300 feet real nice, so I'm very happy with how it ran early. I just have to get it to go the other thousand now. But hopefully I've got two runs left to do it, and it's acting like I want to act. So, maybe tomorrow we can sneak the thing in there with a mid 70, and we'll get to go racing on Sunday."
