Las Vegas, prerace: Tim Wilkerson isn't a gambling man, and going to casinos when he's in town is not on his list. But the frustration he's endured this year may be enough to cause him to change his ways. As the Springfield, Ill. Funny Car favorite prepares his beautiful Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevrolet Monte Carlo for this weekend's ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he wonders if visiting some casinos might help change his luck.
Luck has eluded Wilkerson this year. His hot rod hasn't responded to his directions the way it should, he's broken more parts then usual, and even when he's made good runs, they haven't been quite good enough.
"I know there's good luck floating around in Las Vegas," said Wilkerson. "Maybe I should visit some casinos and see if I can gather some up to take with me to the race track.
"But I feel pretty good about how the car is turning around. I know it's not glaring, but the team and I can tell that things are better. Las Vegas is a great track and it might just be what we need to make some great runs this weekend."
With the odds set at 15 to 1 against Wilkerson, perhaps some Las Vegas luck is the one factor that will help him get the Levi, Ray & Shoup Funny Car to be noticed.
