BRISTOL, Tenn. (July 7, 2007) - With racing results characteristic of the unpredictable nature of Pro Modified drag racing, drivers in the AMS Pro Mod Challenge presented by Tindle Enterprises wrestled in the Saturday night eliminations to make the quarterfinals in the O'Reilly NRHA Thunder valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn. Englishtown winner Tim Tindle was eliminated in a tire-shaking race with Ohio Crankshaft's Scott Ray, and Troy Coughlin in his twin turbo-powered Jegs.com GTO upset No. 2 qualifier Doug Palmer for his first AMS win this season.
"We're really excited to get our first round win," said Coughlin.
"Every round we've run with this turbo has gotten better, and were really just learning how to get things working. We can get the numbers on the back half, but we're still working hard to get it on the front part of the track. Once we do, I think you'll see us becoming a lot more competitive."
Coughlin defeated Palmer 6.439/230.53 to 6.614/225.25.
New Yorker Mike Janis retained the No. 1 qualifying position and advanced to the quarterfinals, passing Andy McCoy in a surprisingly close race, 6.460 to 6.684.
In another wild round, points leader Josh Hernandez dodged a bullet when Rick Stivers red lighted, as Hernandez' Dr. Moon's Rage '68 Camaro broke a blower belt at 500' and coasted down the quarter-mile for the win light.
Defending event champion Jay Payne advanced from the No. 8 spot in an off-pace race against John Russo, 6.387/234.49 to 13.730/85.83.
