Western Sydney International Dragway Confirms N H R A Possibilities For 2008!

Monday, 3 September 2007 - (Sydney, NSW) Western Sydney International Dragway can confirm that progress has been made with the American based National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) in possibly securing a 24th round of the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series in 2008.

Household names like Tony Schumacher, Doug Kalitta, John Force, Ron Capps and more could well shake the $30 million WSID arena to its foundations come September next year!

"We have been in negotiations with the NHRA organization for some time now," remarked WSID Chairman Jim Read. "I have had many ongoing discussions with Senior Vice President-Racing Operations Graham Light from the NHRA and we are excited that very real progress has been made in relation to us securing a round of the 2008 POWERade Drag Racing series."

The suggestion of Sydney joining the NHRA schedule was made earlier today via the ESPN 'NHRA Today' Drag Racing program, when announcer Mike Dunn confirmed speculation that Sydney was being closely considered as a date between the 2008 US Nationals in Indianapolis and the round at Dallas.

When Dunn asked the crowd "would you like to see us race in Sydney Australia?" the response was extremely vocal in support!

The POWERade Drag Racing series is one of the world's premier Motorsport series that features some of the biggest names, including lady-racer Ashley Force, recently voted the Hottest Athlete in an AOL poll.

The series also features Nitro Top Fuel and Funny Car Drag Racing categories, the most explosive motor vehicles in the world that can traverse the quarter mile in less than five seconds and reach speeds well in excess of 530 kilometres per hour.

The NHRA POWERade Series Countdown to the Championship, which in 2007 has generated great interest among fans, sponsors, competitors, and media, will once again feature a tiered playoff-style format in 2008, with competitors vying for the top eight spots through the regular season.

"The Countdown to eight makes it logistically attractive to stage a round of the series in Sydney by only needing to bring out the top eight teams, rather than the full compliment in pursuit of the NHRA POWERade Championship," said Tony Beuk, the WSID General Manager. "We must reiterate however that some further negotiations are required from here before the round is secured for 2008."

Interestingly, the round has been penciled as a Pro Stock Motorcycle round, which also makes sense considering that Australia has embraced the NHRA engine specification for the category.

WSID and the NHRA will provide more detailed progress updates and information as it comes to hand.
