A quick question, that could use a quick accurate answer. My Daughter and son in law are preparing to leave the Chicago area with my 3/4 ton, 32 foot trailer and their 268 " alcohol rail. They bwill take I 80 across Indiana, Ohio , pick up I 90 go up thru penn, into NY accross I 90 to Albany and then take the back roads into N.H. DO THEY NEED TO STOP AT THE WEIGH STATIONS OR JUST DRIVE RIGHT BY. iF ANYBODY knows, please respond of drop me an email [email protected]

Thanks in advance

David

The previous answers are correct.
That being said, everything depends upon the officer. There are so many DOT rules that they many times are unaware of them all. I have a Kenworth tractor pulling our 44ft trailer and blow by them all. Over the years I have stopped at a few without any questions and once entering California was asked by the weigh station officer why I stopped?

The sign before the weigh station says it all

"ALL vehicles over 8 tons MUST weigh"

It does not matter what lettering is or is not on the side or if its registered as a Comercial vehicle or a motor home or a hair dryer. If the GVW is over 8 tons (16K pds) you MUST weigh. Under that then go rite on by.

They may want to pick up some information on MSD (material safety data) sheets if they are carrying more than 5 gals of alcohol though... Friend of mine got a ticket for transporting a 55 gal drum of alcohol an not having correct hazmat information.. Just in case they get stopped for something stupid an the officer wants to be a jerk!!!

Here in NY most Weigh stations are 10000lbs and over (combined weight) BUT most of us blow on by, its still a crap shoot though. Safer to pass the stations on the thruway (I-90) then the interstates. Interstate inspections seem to be looking for everyone while Thruway seem to be just looking at over the road trucks. just my observations though.
It will definatly depend on the boardom level, weather and osifer friendly at the station!
