NORWALK, Ohio (June 29, 2008) – Valley City, Ohio's Scott Beard was selected as the 12th NAPA AUTO PARTS Honorary Crew Member of the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series today at the Second Annual NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio
Beard is the owner of Total Performance Services Inc., a NAPA AUTO PARTS Truck Center located in Brunswick, Ohio. The 46-year-old Ohio native has been drag racing for almost 30 years and his wife and son also compete. He owns and races a Super Pro Plymouth Duster and is in the process of building a Pro Modified car. Beard's wife, Michelle, drives a Super Pro Dodge Challenger, and their son Tyler competes in a junior dragster. In addition, his family used to own Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio, which was once an NHRA-sanctioned track.
"They didn't mention if they needed me to set up the clutch or anything like that," said Beard with a laugh, knowing he could probably handle the task based on his experience in and knowledge of the sport. "This is amazing. I usually don't get excited, but I couldn't sleep or concentrate on anything else waiting for today. We go to the races every year and I've never really had the chance to get this close to the action. It's like a dream come true. I'd really like to thank NAPA AUTO PARTS for giving me this opportunity and coming through for me once again."
Tyler Key, the account executive who handles the local advertising in the Ohio and Pennsylvania areas for NAPA AUTO PARTS, took part in selecting Beard for the Honorary Crew Member award. "Scott is one of NAPA's biggest customers," said Key. "We went to several of our NAPA stores and asked them for recommendations for this honor. After we looked them over we noticed Scott's background in drag racing coupled with his loyalty to NAPA. He only shops at NAPA and he does a lot of business with one of our biggest stores in the Cleveland area, so he was a natural for this award."
Beard received a NAPA team jersey and met the entire NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car crew. He also enjoyed a tour of the team transporter and pit area and watched the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge crew work on the car. After taking in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations from the starting line Beard escorted the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car to the staging lanes in the team's Dodge Durango tow vehicle for the first round. He also helped retrieve the car at the end of the track following Ron Capps' first-round run.
During the season the NAPA distribution centers at each event have different criteria for choosing the people who are potential NAPA AUTO PARTS Honorary Crew Members.
