Del Worsham improved mightily during his first Saturday lap, making a full pull at 4.837 to move from the bottom of the pack to the No. 8 spot at the time. During the final session on Saturday, he jumped up to an even better 4.815, which completed one of his best Saturdays in recent memory. The pair of solid runs allowed him to stay in the 8th spot after some shuffling of the order. He will face Jack Beckman in round one on Sunday.
"Maybe we're starting to look a little more like the red Checker, Schuck's, Kragen team now," Worsham said. "We've been searching, and working, and struggling, for quite few races, and for one whole day here, but on this day we found our groove again and made two very good laps. Even if you make four great laps in qualifying, the best scenario is still to improve along the way, so that you're running your best at the end of qualifying. That's exactly what we've done here, so that's all good.
"We'll be facing a guy who is driving a fast car, but as a new driver he's still looking for his first round win in a Funny Car. You know Jack is going to win a lot of rounds in his Funny Car career, but all we want right now is to make someone else be the first guy he takes out. Our goal will be the same as it's always been. We'll try to go down the track and run the best possible number we're capable of. If they can outrun us, more credit to them, but we want to be very competitive and we don't want to hand anyone anything."
