Now that turbo cars are really coming into their, I have a question, for fun. They are running 5.80s @ 255 in PM cars that are heavier than PS cars. What is the performance potential of one of these powerplants in an altered or dragster? I'm thinking it could be a competitive TAD combo. Thoughts?

I quite like the turbo cars, but the NHRA is going to have to do something soon to address parity as these cars will be dominating and the only way to be competitive will be to have a turbo car.

To me the whole appeal of Pro Mod is the different engine combinations.

Nunzio, NHRA banned Turbo's from the Alky Classes over 10 years ago. I guess they saw the potential back then, there is a 6 Cyl Turbo Dragster in Comp eliminator that has run a 6.30@220!

Bob Niemczyk is running at E-town with the I/D, I don't think he has it completely down pat yet because there were times he had the turbo spooling up after the green light showed albeit that was maybe a qualifying tactic because you strictly race the clock.

Everyone keeps saying how the turbos dominate and that parity is not prevalent, yet so far this year we've had 3 wins by nitrous cars and one win by a blown car. Where is the domination?

I bet if you asked Jay Payne, Chip King, Troy Coughlin or Dennis Radford, they would give you an answer!

Exactly..

But none of those guys have won a race. Or been in the thick of one, except for Troy in Atlanta.

The cars can run big numbers but until they start completely dominating race after race with wins, I don't see a reason to change combinations.

And you know what that answer would be? They aren't dominating, right now they are playing catch up, and to make any other argument is foolish!

The nitrous cars only have a chance when the temps are cool ... when it gets hot, the forced induction cars have a big advantage.

Mike, he didn't say that they "are" dominating; he said that they will dominate. If and when they dominate it will be no different than PSB. Smaller Turbo, more weight, or less for NOS and then again maybe play with cubic inches for some or all of the combinations. I think it will be quite a while for the Turbo guys to reach the consistency seen with the blown cars and the guys spraying. But it sure is a fun class for the spectator.

You guys must not get out and watch something other than NHRA :D

Turbos will be king of the HP hill in any class where they can be competitive.

Look at Super Street Outlaw/Outlaw 10.5 . . . it started as a blown vs nitrous deal and once turbos came in they dominated. Only once the rules allowed the blower cars a weight advantage and the nitrous cars a serious weight advantage was it possible for them to come back.

Case in point the Pro Nitrous class in ADRL. They had to make a class split off from a Pro Mod-type class because the cars couldn't hang with the blower/turbo cars.

Point is the turbo cars will move to the head of the pack by next year if not the end of this year with the limited amount of testing NHRA allows. Personett already had 6+mph on the entire field LAST YEAR.

All the NHRA can do is wait until the top 6-8 cars are turbo cars at every race, the nitrous guys start leaving for ADRL and then come back with what weight breaks they think will be competitive.

Actually, generally the opposite is true. They make their own air with the nitrous and probably will remain competitive thru the summer, but once the cool fall air comes in, and the turbos have a few more months to sort out their combinations, they (nitrous cars) will be at a big disadvantage.:(

This reminds me of the TAD parity issue, BAD's vs A/F.

As long as different combos are allowed, parity will always be in the eye of the beholder.

Exactly my thoughts.

My comment goes all the way back to last year at Indy, when Personnett manhandled the field all weekend. Most people quickly decided that Turbos were set to take over Pro Mod from the beginning of this year. I have yet to see a race this year where a turbo car has been the best all weekend. Sure they have fired off a few stellar numbers, but the consistency has not been there. I keep hearing the will take over the class.....it's always they will, they will........eventually it has to happen right?

Hey guys nobody really answered the original question of the thread. Even though I guess turbos aren't allowed in TAD, can anyone speculate as to how quick and fast an engine combo from a 5.80 door car would go in a dragster? Gotta be competitive with TAD times, I would think. Obviously. depending upon the weight of the car.

I am assuming then we are going to stick with the 88mm rule as the pro mods have? I would guess that a turbo dragster could go mid 5.40s.
