"But those who represent the victims hope the people who put Critchley behind the wheel on that deadly day will be held accountable for their decision." Call me crazy, and this whole thing is one big mess, but wouldn't "the people who put Critchley behind the wheel on that deadly day" be the organizers of the event?

I don't think Troy Critchley has ever been a very wealthy man. Most hard core racers aren't. They just do whatever they need to do to keep racing. The lawyers thiink they can squeeze a turnip and make everyone rich.........

They'll go through Troy to get to anyone with pockets.

My dad was involved in serious industrial accident in the early 70s when he was working for my grandfather. A hydraulic valve malfunctioned because one hole in a block had been drilled too deeply. For some reason, he had to sue his dad and then my grandfather had to sue that company. (and he got peanuts compared to today for a lifetime of pain)

Its sad....
all of this for what was supposed to be a charity event.

I agree Erica. Its unfortunate that we live in a sue-happy society where people will sue for anything. 95% of lawyers are scum. Its a shame when police officers are fired and sued for shooting criminals and people are sued for shooting people who broke into there houses etc and lose.

This is just an unfortunate accident and if they are suing for unsafe condiitions then maybe they should have not put themselves in it if it were so dangerous. I feel for all involved, the people's families that lost loved ones, Troy, the whole AMS drag team, etc but it was an ACCIDENT.

No truer words have been spoken!

Plenty of "guilt" to go around.
Now the lawyers will divy up the proceeds.

It was an irresponsible display - Never shoulda' happened no matter the good intentions.

You must be an attorney with that type of thinking. I hope we never get to shake hands, because if you got an infection, I'd be in trouble....

Yeah, you gotta love some of the wording in the article.

Now, attorneys are wondering where the money for their clients will come from.

Right. They're the ones who run those big ads on billboards because they're so concerned about you.

...named as a defendant in a dozen pending lawsuits that total about $100 million.

"The truth is I've been doing this 30 years I've never seen anything quite like this," says Attorney Lewis Cobb.

Right. They've never tried to sue anyone for more money than they had.

Six second car, public street, poor crowd control and just a bad idea from the start so lets rip the driver because he does not have 100 million laying around. Seems the lawyers think drag racers have NASCAR or Formula One money.
To quote the late great Warren Zevon "Send Lawyers Guns & Money cuz the shit has hit the fan!"

I wonder if there is something to help with legal fees for Critchley. I would never donated to the victims if I would have known they were going to sue. In retrospect, I should have known, too much media attention for the blood sucking lawyers to resist.

Poor guy.

Edit: On the other hand, and I am doing a Gary Scelzi and waffling a bit, if the money I donated when to medical bills and ONLY medical bills, I'd be fine with it, but not to sue somebody.

Im kind of at a loss here...I feel that someone should be held responsible in paying medical bills and funeral expenses...who that someone is? We dont know.
I think there could be somewhat of a compromise here...the "responsible parties" paying for the medical and funeral expenses plus doing something nice for the victims such as setting up a fund for injured victims or doing something in their name...but not just paying them tons of money...those people arent going to come back and no money amount should make it "okay"...so I feel there is a way to make this better if people would step up the plate and take some responsiblity and those families to step down from trying to get rich when they really should be trying to prevent something like this from happening again...
Just my 2cents!

This is a big mess any way you look at it. Like any Law suit Lawyers get paid first. They will be the ones who make out the best in the Law Suits.. What a shame. :(

Every so often I google news this incident to see whart the latest is, and I believe that AMS among others has already been named in the suites that have been filed thus far. Filing for bankruptcy is Crit's only option. This one is a real tuffy and there could be several more victims filing. Nobody but the ambulance chasers will win.

My heart and prays go out to all involved with this mess. But.It shouldn't have happend. If the charity putting it on had it at a NHRA race track with the right safty stuff in placethen it would not have happen this way. Thay who should be sued. This is sad for our great sport:(

It could also be argued that if the spectators has stayed where the police put them to begin with then they may not have been injured in the first place. This is one of the things that makes this whole scenario such a wicked web. Like you, my heart goes out to all of the folks involved but it's going to be tough for any judge, jury, etc., to figure this out and sadly it will be the lawyers who are going to profit on this deal.

Lawyers, generally, do not want to sue and collect from an individual..it is too much trouble, most people don't have the money, and it takes too long to collect..they want to collect from an insurance policy. Unless there is some bizarre policy that would cover operating a race car on a public road, Critchley will not have coverage.

The article says a shell corporation with no assets owned the car. That is a smart decision and shows smart planning on someone's part. The only 'value' of that company would be the car and maybe the tow rig, parts, etc. Obviously not near enough to cover this case.

In the end, the only people paying will be those with insurance coverage, which will probably include the local municipality, Highway Patrol, and maybe the charity organization itself. BTW, I'm not a lawyer, and don't play one on TV...but I stayed at Holiday Inn Express a few weeks ago!
