Troxel 18th, Hawley 19th after First Qualifying Day at Atlanta

COMMERCE, Ga., April 25, 2008 – Gotham City Racing Funny Car drivers Melanie Troxel and Frank Hawley each ran 4.96 seconds in Friday’s opening round of qualifying for Sunday’s Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

But after one of the quickest second sessions of the season, Troxel was 18th with a 4.966-second time at 314.93 mph in the special Dream House for Medically Fragile Children Dodge Charger R/T and Hawley was one step behind her with his 4.968 at 303.57 mph in the ProCare Rx Dodge Charger R/T.

That run came in the first session and was fifth-quickest at the time.

“That was a pretty good run for our new car that had never been to the finish line before,” said Hawley. On his next run, Hawley said the “car moved toward the center line and I decided to abort the run. The car stopped the timer in 5.226 seconds.

For Troxel, the second was the best . . . and could’ve been better.

“It wasn’t too bad,” she said, “but the team was expecting better. The motor hurt itself early in the run when it scuffed a piston.” Her first lap was timed in 5.053 seconds.

The good news for each driver is they have two more qualifying runs on the Saturday schedule.
