[coverattach=1]Mooresville, NC - There should have been celebrating in Chapel Hill last night as Travis Harvey ran the table at Mooresville Dragway, site of the Mad Dawg series' most prestigious event, DOORcarpalooza. Harvey, widely known as the Carolina Tar Heels' biggest fan, played a perfect game against heavy competition in Mooresville on Saturday night. In the end, it came down to a pair of pro-built Camaros, with Harvey edging out Taylorsville's Darrin Hoyle.
Harvey took command of the event early with a #1 qualifying effort, stopping the timers at 4.17 @ 175mph; behind the wheel of Russ Farmer's Carolina Blue 1968 Camaro. In the opening round of eliminations, Harvey got past Sambo Price, who thrilled fans with a Camaro that would seemingly carry the left front wheel nearly to the finish line. Sambo's day ended with game effort against Harvey, who had a winning elapsed time of 4.13.
In the second round Harvey faced Ford Probe pilot and former Quick-8 Racers Association Champion, Todd Howard. Harvey's consistent Camaro motored to the finish line, setting up a thrilling final round against Darrin Hoyle. Hoyle, who started from a #3 qualifying position, slid past the 57 Chevy of Jim Teachman in round one, followed by a win over defending event winner, Ronnie Gardner, who clocked an event high 181mph in qualifying.
Staged and ready, Harvey and Hoyle slam the throttle and aimed for the finish line. Nearing the 660 foot stripe Hoyle's Camaro slowed as Harvey begin pulling away. Thundering through the traps, Harvey rang out a 4.12 @ 175mph to take the win. It was approximately 11 months ago in Mooresville that Harvey found his first Mad Dawg winner's circle. "The same 762 Brett Nesbitt motor that won last year is the same motor that won tonight, it's just in a different car," commented Harvey, as he spoke of the latest Camaro from Race Tech Race Cars. My engine man, Brett Nesbitt, doesn't get the credit he deserves because he hasn't been building these big motors very long, but I'd put him against Gene Fulton or Sonny Leonard any day," added Harvey.
Harvey insists there's more left in the combination, and he might just put it to use against Gilbert "The Rock" Jacobs on Sunday at Piedmont Dragway, where a much anticipated grudge race is scheduled to take place. Other winners at Mooresville on Saturday night include, Mike Heath over Clay "Baby Boy" McCauley in the Little Dawg final. In Renegade action, Bubba "The Burner" Turner got past John Salley.
