Tim Wilkerson went 0-for-2 in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang on Friday, smoking the tires at a troublesome transition spot in each lane. In an effort to squeeze a little more e.t. out of it in Q2, he pedaled his LRS mount once but then gave up the chase when it was obvious his time was not going to be in the top 12.

Failing to land in 12th or better, he will have no time recorded for Friday and will enter Saturday's qualifying sessions looking to secure a berth in the top 16.

"Obviously not what we wanted, although we made a little progress from Q1 to Q2," Wilk said. "The car was just real aggressive both times, driving itself into tire smoke like it wanted to rotate the earth. We made a little change to it, and tried to calm it down, but even then it acted like it was trying to run away from something scary. And this is a little different from Pomona, where the track had a pretty wide window you could run in and everyone was pretty much running strong. It was a lot easier to get over-center today, and we did it twice.

"Off the track, my guys are making progress in the pit, too, so that's a good thing. We got the car turned around and had it fired in about an hour between the two runs, and there's no way they could've done that last week. I guess they're quick learners, so now the crew chief has to be a quick learner too and figure out how to get this car to the other end tomorrow. The weather should stay cool, so there will be plenty of room to move up if we can do that."
