COMMERCE, Ga. – Tony Pedregon parlayed his quick reaction time Sunday with his best run of the weekend into an opening-round victory over Jim Head en route to a quarterfinal finish in the Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
Pedregon, the No. 12 qualifier, left the starting line first (.111-second to .122) and his Nitro Fish Funny Car covered the 1,000-foot track in 4.156 seconds at 304.25 mph. Head (No. 5 qualifier) finished with a 4.154 at 301.94 mph.
It was Tony Pedregon vs. his brother Cruz in the next round, and Cruz took the win light, 4.158 at 306.33 to 4.408 at 222.25.
“Overall, I am pleased with the progress we made this weekend,” said Tony. “We’ve been changing parts and the car responded. The motor is finally making power . . . and that is encouraging.
“We want to work on that and continue to improve our performance.”
Pedregon will be back in action Friday in Topeka, Kan. when qualifying begins for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, May 20-22.
