BRAINERD, Minn. – Tommy Johnson, Jr., driver of the Monster Energy Funny Car, is looking forward to The Lucas Oil Nationals Aug. 8-10 at a track he has adopted as a hometown venue.
“I am originally from Iowa ,” said Johnson, “and since I didn’t have an NHRA national event track in the state, I claimed anything in the surrounding area as my home track. Brainerd International Raceway falls into that designation.
“I’ve raced there for years and had a lot of success. I won the Funny Car trophy there just two years ago, one of my better victories, a real dominating victory.
“It’s always special to go back to Brainerd. It’s beautiful country and the fans have a great time up there. It’s always an enjoyable race, almost like a resort and a race at the same time. There are certain tracks where you feel comfortable racing and there are tracks where you just race. Brainerd is one of the tracks where I’m in my comfort zone.”
Johnson has nine career national event victories to his credit and hopes to add another at Brainerd.
“Our Monster Energy team is beginning to gain some consistency,” continued Johnson. “We’re happy with the mid-season turn around our team has made, but it’s a real fight in the Funny Car class. Everyone is digging deep. Our team is fired up and ready to go some rounds.”
Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Lucas Oil Nationals begins Friday, Aug.8 at 3:30 p. m. with a second round at 6:15 p. m. There are two qualifying sessions Saturday, noon and 3 p. m. , with final eliminations scheduled to begin Sunday at 11 a. m.
Johnson to make appearance at Freedom Valu: On Thursday, Aug. 7, Monster Energy driver Tommy Johnson Jr. will greet fans and sign autographs from 5 – 6 p. m. at the Freedom Valu store near the entrance to Brainerd International Raceway, 18316 State Hwy 371.
