CLERMONT, Ind – Tommy Johnson, Jr., driver of the Monster Energy Funny Car believes that the history of NHRA all boils down to the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Aug. 29-Sept. 1.
“Indy has always been our sport’s premiere event,” said Johnson. “I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that you get an extra fire deep down inside you for this race. A good showing here makes a bright spot for the season.
“If a team has been struggling through the season, a win at Indy could make a bad year a great one.
“I was in the final here in 2002 and finished runner-up. I was that close to a win. The ultimate goal is to have a win at Indy on your resume.
“I like racing at this event because it’s home for us. This is our sport’s longest weekend, but there’s a comfort level for us because Indy is home. We get to stay in our house, sleep in our own bed, and it helps take the stress out of such a big event.”
Johnson has nine career national event victories to his credit and hopes to add another at Indy.
“Our Monster Energy team is beginning to gain some consistency,” continued Johnson. “ It’s a real fight in the Funny Car class. Everyone is digging deep. Our team is fired up and ready to go some rounds.”
