NORWALK , Ohio – Tommy Johnson, Jr. is a big fan of Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park , and based on team owner Kenny Bernstein’s runner-up finish there last season, Johnson is looking forward to a competitive weekend at the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals June 27-29.
“We were very impressed with the facility when we raced there last year for the first time,” said Johnson. “It’s one of the nicest tracks on the circuit. Track owner Bill Bader did a tremendous job.
“Kenny ran really well there last year defeating some really tough competitors en route to victory. Maybe we can go one better this year.
“This year our team has run some good solid numbers, but we’ve been frustrated by little things here and there that have gone wrong mechanically. Jimmy Walsh (crew chief) and the team are putting in the maximum amount of man hours to get consistency in the race car.
“Consistency wins rounds and wins races. It’s a real fight out there in the Funny Car class with in excess of 20 Funny Cars trying to squeeze into the top 16 each weekend. Everyone is digging deep and if you stumble with a mechanical problem on one run during qualifying it puts you behind the eight ball for the weekend.
“We’re definitely ready to have some long days on Sunday behind the wheel of our Monster Energy Dodge Charger. “
Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals begins Friday, June 27 at 4:30 p.m. followed by a second session at 7:30 p.m. There are two qualifying sessions Saturday, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with eliminations scheduled to begin Sunday at 11 a.m.
