Richmond, VA (10-12-08) -- The Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment Top Fuel team with J.R. Todd at the helm proceeded to the quarterfinals at the third annual NHRA Virginia Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park after being defeated by Doug Herbert.
Todd, the No. 11 qualifier, boosted himself further into the race in the first round against the higher qualified car of Larry Dixon (No. 6) when he left first (.071-082) and beat Dixon on a hole-shot by the slim margin of only nine-thousandths of a second (.009) or the margin of a front wheel. Todd ran a season-best 1,000 feet elapsed time and speed of 3.822 seconds, 315.27 mph to Dixon’s pass of 3.820 seconds, 312.93 mph.
In reaching the quarterfinals, it signified only the second time in 2008 that both Morgan Lucas Racing teams progressed to the quarterfinals since the Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd, Mn. back in August. Todd’s teammate, Lucas defeated titlist Cory McClenathan in his opening round.
Todd’s good fortune ran out in the quarterfinals alongside of Doug Herbert in one of the tightest races of the day. He left the starting line (.092 - .094) first on Herbert by just a slim margin before being nipped at the finish line after running another incredible elapsed time of 3.845 seconds, 312.42 mph to Herbert’s winning time of 3.831 seconds, 302.55 mph. The margin of victory was .012-of a second.
“You have to get up for it when you’re racing Larry Dixon,” said Todd. “I think he’s one of the best driver’s of our time. On the run with Herbert, there’s no excuse for me missing the tree against him and that’s now two weeks straight I was late by my book. It’s my job as a driver to leave on time. Two weeks we have and two weeks we’ve lost by about a foot. I need to suck it up next time we raced Doug Herbert and beat him for our team.”
Todd was the No. 11 qualifier running a pass of 3.845 seconds, 311.77 mph.
In the NHRA POWERade points standings, Todd will continue to stay in the No. 11 position with 915 points after the completion of 22 of 24 NHRA National events.
