PRAIRIE VIEW, Ill. (March 21, 2007) - Race season is here – finally! With the long cold winter behind everyone, it is time to get down to the business of racing. There is tremendous excitement in the air surrounding the IHRA Nitro Jam season opener, Amalie Motor Oil Texas Nationals, presented by NAPA Auto Parts. San Antonio Raceway will once again host the first national event and no team is more excited about what 2007 has to offer than the Zizzo Racing Team.
The excitement is for good reason.
Coming off an incredible ride in 2006, fans saw Zizzo earn low qualifier honors at both Martin (4.664ET at 314.61MPH) and Budds Creek (4.615ET at 325.61MPH), including an event win and semi-final appearance respectively. The team's effort at Budds Creek set new track records while beating Clay Milican’s previous mark.
"It is our absolute intention to carry the momentum forward from last year," says team owner Tony Zizzo. "We had some success last year but we are not satisfied. We are out for a championship.”
While a championship is clearly in the sights of Zizzo’s team, they realize there is a lot of racing to do before the champion is crowned.
"The thing is, we have made a couple of changes this season," added TJ Zizzo. "We ran the old tire last year and IHRA has us running the new tire this year, that is a huge change for us. We've also changed the chassis a little and now we have a little bit longer car. Those are changes that can make a huge difference for us this year."
When the car rolls out of the transporter in San Antonio there will be a new marketing partner on the side - Race News Magazine.
Wordsmith Media, Inc. is a California-based communications company specializing in periodicals, book publishing and DVD's, including the all new Race News Magazine. Race News Magazine will have its logo displayed on the Top Fuel Dragster throughout the 2007 season.
"We are proud to be part of the Zizzo Racing Team with our premiere publication, Race News Magazine," said Wordsmith Media CEO and Race News Magazine publisher James D. Griffith. "We’re also excited about TJ’s chances on the track and confident this partnership will give us the best opportunity for the championship this year. ‘Keeping pace with the race’, Race News Magazine hopes to raise the awareness of the exhilarating world of motor sports through our existing distribution channels in Borders, Barnes & Noble, Wal-Mart and many other national distributers."
Race News Magazine and Zizzo Racing intend to do their part to make San Antonio Raceway Park rock as they have invited over 11,000 people as their guest to watch the race.
"Anytime anyone new comes to the drag strip that is exciting… I’m certainly glad to have them (Race News Magazine) on board,” said TJ Zizzo.
What about the racing?
"We’re just like everybody else right now… we’re all tied. Anybody can win the championship," said TJ with a laugh. "You've got a good group of cars in San Antonio that should be very competitive. Anything could happen.”
Zizzo returns his entire team from '06 and he feels that will give him an advantage in '07.
"When we go to San Antonio, it will be the first rodeo for the year. You expect to be riding the same bull you were riding last year, but sometimes that doesn't happen that way," commented Zizzo. "But I have all 13 team members back this season and that is why I am not as nervous as I would otherwise be. I mean these guys eat, sleep, and breathe this stuff."
"You don’t really change the recipe… you just tweak it a little."
One thing is for sure… there is going to a lot riding on this race in the Lone Star state.
