Auburn Hills, Mich. — Team Mopar® NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson continues to consistently have one of the fastest cars in the class, evidenced by the track record that he set last weekend en route to capturing the top spot in qualifying. Johnson looks to keep that pace going as the Western Swing wraps up with the 24th Annual NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., Aug. 5–7.

Johnson earned his third No. 1 qualifying position of the season and the 18th of his career at the most recent NHRA event at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., advancing to the quarterfinals. Johnson moved up a spot to fifth in the point standings with three races remaining before the Countdown to the Championship begins.

The Team Mopar veteran was victorious at Pacific Raceways in 2006 and reached the final round three straight years (2006-2008). Last season, Johnson qualified third, advancing to the quarterfinals, and has reached at least the quarters eight times in his career at the track. He was the top qualifier at Seattle in 2009 and has been among the top-three in qualifying four times at the track.

“We’ve always run pretty well at Seattle,” said Johnson. “We have good notes from all the times we’ve been up there. The air is very good there and that lends itself to a lot of horsepower, which we have with these Mopar engines. The Mopar Dodge Avenger feels good right now and as long as we make straight runs down the track, we should be in good shape.”

The native of Greeneville, Tenn. is just 37 points out of the fourth spot in the NHRA Pro Stock standings, with three races remaining until the Countdown to the Championship begins. Each of the 10 drivers that qualify for the Countdown to the Championship will have their points reapportioned for the six-race showdown.

“We were able to pick up a spot in the point standings last weekend and I still want gain another spot or two,” said Johnson. “To be in the top-three or four when the Countdown starts would be ideal. If we can keep winning rounds and going deep into events, we’ll continue to gain points.”
