Team Mopar® Dodge Avenger driver Allen Johnson opened the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship playoffs with a first round exit on Sunday, Sept. 18 at zMax Dragway in Concord, N.C.
The native of Greeneville, Tenn. was the No. 3 qualifier, matching up against Greg Stanfield in the first round. Johnson got off the line with a strong 0.020-second reaction time, though severe tire shake right at the start ended his day in the opening frame. Fellow Mopar-powered Pro Stocker driver V. Gaines also bowed out in the first round.
Vincent Nobile, the No. 10 qualifier, used a 0.007-second reaction time coupled with a 6.558-second pass at 211.20 mph to down Larry Morgan to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Nobile got off the line first with a 0.011-second reaction time against Shane Gray. The rookie sensation ran a 6.575/210.57 to his opponent’s 6.594/209.20.
Nobile was matched up with Kurt Johnson in the semifinals and again had a nearly perfect reaction time, leaving the line in 0.004-seconds. Nobile’s pass of 6.586/210.87 was not quite enough to hold off Johnson, who tracked him down with a slightly quicker 6.550/209.82.
Allen Johnson is currently sixth in the Pro Stock standings following the first round of the NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs, with Nobile third. Next up for the Mopar-powered NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series competitors is the 26th Annual AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas, Sept. 22–25.
