INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Team JEGS drivers John and Jeg Coughlin and Brad Plourd made their presence felt during this weekend's NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals with strong showings in several sportsman eliminators.
The yellow and black attack at Indy was led by three-time NHRA champ Jeg Coughlin, who posted a semifinal finish in Friday's Mopar Super Stock Hemi Challenge and a quarterfinal finish in his first appearance behind the wheel of Richard Freeman's Comp eliminator Chevy Cobalt. Coughlin capped the weekend by reaching the third round of eliminations in Michael Ogburn's West Coast Hemis 1968 Barracuda Super Stock entry.
"We didn't quite get the results we were looking for but I had a good time this weekend," said Coughlin. "I especially enjoyed racing in the Hemi Challenge. That event gets more and more popular each year and I really owe a lot of thanks to [team owner] Michael Ogburn and [crew chief] Harry Holton for letting me drive their car. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to do so again sometime soon.
"I also had a good time driving Richard Freeman's car," Coughlin continued. "Considering the fact that I had never made a run in that car before we got here, I think a quarterfinal finish is pretty decent. I hadn't raced Comp in a long time but it was a lot of fun."
John Coughlin qualified his Team Jeg's Cavalier eighth in the 128-car Super Stock field and won the SS/CM class title on Friday, but his weekend ended shortly thereafter when he lost to Robert Burgin in the opening round of Super Stock eliminations.
After his early defeat, Coughlin became the lead cheerleader for Plourd, the reigning U.S. Nationals Super Comp champion who was once again wheeling Coughlin's Team Jeg's dragster. Plourd, of Maple Valley, Wash., was looking to become the first driver to win back-to-back Super Comp titles at Indy, but came up a little short with a close quarterfinal loss against former NHRA world champ Jimmy Lewis.
"I'm very proud of the job Brad did for us this weekend," said John Coughlin. "I'm amazed that he is able to come to the biggest race of the year, jump into a car that he is not familiar with, and win rounds against the best racers in the country. We had a great time racing together this weekend."
