Team Geico

I attend 6-8 events a year and cringe whenever the Team Geico morons try to entertain the crowd. It's the same thing at every race. I appreciate that NHRA is trying to do something to fill the down times, but does anybody else find their routine/schtick to be unbelievably annoying and particularly unfunny?

I find it annoying as all get out.

The NHRA should have comedian on retainer for down times. Now that would be entertaining...

I was reading some coverage of the March Meet (in Hot Rod Deluxe maybe?) and they mentioned having "cackle cars" pushed down the return road during the cleanups....sounds like a damn good idea to me

It is annoying, especially to someone who has to sit through it more than once. ;) I guess if you only attend one race a year it's tolerable...it could be freshened...

That would be FAR better! (Of course, silence would be an improvement, but cackling would be MUCH more enjoyable!)

Team Geico hit me with the double whammy yesterday in Bristol, not only was it Team Geico doing their tired routine, they tried to have the crowd sing Rocky Top, which makes every UK fans skin crawl ...

Mark, I completely agree. I cant stand Team Geico. And like someone else mentioned, I dont mind the Traxxas display.

I think it makes everyone's skin crawl, except that breeding family, the Duggars? they love singing that 'round the campfire....at least it seems they would...

The only thing good about that is Traxxas, Which doesn't count as Team Geico segment as is no different than having a Freestyle Motocross or BMX Exhibition (Like the Hell on Wheels team at E-Town Last year). and hearing the Benny Hill theme and "wha wha wha wawawawawawawawawa" soundbites. The games themselves suck though. TV Theme Trivia unless "Sanford & Son" is one of the tunes, I don't care.

They were sort of funny the first time. My wife's going to her first race in September, and she'll probably like them.

Now when they come on, it's time for the ol' ipod.

I guess I'm confused, if everybody feels this way then why do so many stand up and yell when they ask "Who wants a free T-shirt?" they are here simply to fill some of the down time, and that's what they do. And no matter what some of you guys think, most of the fans love having a chance to be on the Jumbotron and win something.

When I started doing these events if we had a 15 minute oil down, we just played recorded commercials, would that be better?

Do you guys go to any other sports? Do you complain that they play the same songs during breaks at a Hockey game? or that it's the same halftime show at the Basketball game?

The "breaks" in the action of a hockey game are 30 seconds long. The halftime show at a basketball game is a predictable thing that happens at a known time, for a known time. The breaks between rounds at a drag race are predictable and are filled with other classes. It's the unplanned oildown time outs that are so painful.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Pay Alan, Bob, some great crew chiefs and others to make a series of 20-30 insider videos, a couple minutes a piece, that teach about the sport. How does a clutch work, what are they doing when the look under the hood of a funny car, how to they tune a PS suspension for the track, explain Super class racing, explain the tree and why they went to LEDs (and what the drivers think about them). I could (and have) come up with a list of several dozen of these.

Use the time for good, not evil. Teach people about the sport. Grow the sport. Toss me a t-shirt and clothe me for a day, teach me about the sport and build a fan for a lifetime.

Its amazing how alcohol can make fans go crazy for a t-shirt that I doubt will ever be worn again... outside of being worn on laundry day when no other options exist...

I was at the Southern Nationals in Atlanta just recently and I recall a video of Alan teaching about the sport. I do not remember the exact topic, but they do make and show videos that teach!

I'm sure Alan can refresh my memory.

Bikini contests during the oildowns!
I was on youtube watching NHRA vids and the sport compact event vids showed up on the sidebar. Some of them had bikini contests. Wow! Those are awesome.

Alan does. At the Winters they had some fantastic tech segments on the big screen that Alan narrates.

I don't drink, but a t-shirt landed in my hands at Laguna Seca and another one at Famoso.
One was a 2X white shirt that had a miniature "American LeMans Series" logo on the left chest pocket area. I never wear it cuz it's too big.
The other one was a shirt from an insurance company. I gave it to a kid sitting nearby.
