There's a genuine expectation of records being achieved during this weekend's Castrol Edge Winternationals at Queensland's Willowbank Raceway and one of the most respected and familiar names of Australian drag racing will again be giving it there all during the action packed four day program.
Victor and Ben Bray represent the coming together of the old and new of the sport at an International level, as their insurmountable achievements. This covers more than three decades of competition and places them amongst the most elite in their chosen
profession.
2007/2008 season sees Team Bray resigned to the fact their strangle hold on the super popular Top Doorslammer category has been loosened, but as collectively 9 Times Australian Champions the Brays put it, "There's no better motivator than seeing someone else take the crown"
"It's great to be doing what you love day in day out. I'm really enjoying the fact I'm able to live out my dreams through what we do in drag racing. I wouldn't have it any other way," confessed 24 year-old Ben.
Both Doorslammers started the season pretty well with Ben putting down a PB in Perth mid year and a runner up but we certainly haven't reached the heights we have in recent years. "Put simply we had a great Winternationals last year, tried to move forward with some different combinations this season and although we have both recorded PB's in the last year just didn't put the big numbers on the board when it counted.
John Zappia deserves the Top Doorslammer championship. He has had a consistent fast car all year long. While John Zappia, Aaron Lynch, Deno Brijeski and Kath Stevens have already recorded times in the fives, both Dad and I would love to join them."
Reaffirming Victor's longevity at the top of his game in Top Doorslammer; it was a thrilling semi-final against his old mate and former member of the wild bunch John Zappia. Last year's Winternationals showpiece finished the season on a high.
Since then there's been a lot of big things happening away from the track that have been very positive for the teams' overall program, but everything will be put into context as father and son begin the biggest four days on the Australian drag racing calendar.
"During the year we had the luxury of building a sports compact car for Benny, Turbo charges and an engine with half the amount of cylinders that I'm used to, has been a very interesting project. The car just ran a personal best 8.17 @ 163MPH in Sydney at the compact attack so we have entered in the super stock bracket also," added Victor.
"In Top Alcohol this year Ben has managed a couple of semi-finals, a final, low ET and high speed this year but lacked a little in the consistency department."
"I really hope we can put it all together this week-end and give all three brackets a real good shake up."
"Testing in the Doorslammer has been positive towards the Castrol Edge Winternationals and we'll stick with the proven formula in Top Alcohol that has worked for us in previous years.
Action gets under way at the Castrol Edge Winternationals at 12 noon on Thursday 30th.Support categories filling the bill until Friday night's opening Group One qualifying session from 5.30pm.
